3-MMC – Discovery, History & Research
The first official report of a novel compound identified within “legal High” samples and subsequently analysed by clinical toxicology labs was in 2012 by a Swedish STRIDA project. The creation of 3-MMC is likely the product of an inventor creating the compound as a “designer drug” for the “legal high” market, with the synthesis being performed in China or India.
After initial vendor and user review discussion of 3-MMC online the compound quickly found its way into publications and Toxicology reports, as laboratories began to analyse and catalogue it within the ever expanding novel psychoactive substance library.
After some time on the market, it was finally banned in October 2015 in the likely source country of China, with follow up bans placed on it in the Czech Republic, UK and Germany.
Interestingly, 3-MMC has been the subject of some in vivo research in large mammals, which is generally never seen with such novel research chemicals. This has allowed for a much larger knowledge base of it efficacy and receptor binding profile than most other research chemicals.

3-MMC – Chemical Structural Data
3-MMC is a substituted cathinone class. Sharing the common chemical backbone of amphetamines, 3-MMC differs from some of the other more common cathinones in that it has a Ketone substitution. 3-MMC has a double methyl substitution with one being at the R3 of the phenyl ring and another substitution at the nitrogen group. Apart from the methyl group 3-MMC is identical to Mephedrone or 4-MMC.
3-MMC – Structure-Activity & Chemical Similarity Predictions
Based on the fact that 3-MMC has the rare advantage of having had in vivo studies conducted on the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic profile. With a rapid oral absorption and a plasma half-life of 0.8 hours. Furthermore, it was found that pigs administered 3-MMC showed significantly slower rate of increased body fat after feeding.
Based on the chemical similarity to other Stimulants and Cathinones, it would be fair to assume that 3-MMC has a strong entactogen and general stimulating action, with probably binding to the dopamine and norepinephrine transporter proteins as a releasing agent. It may also have an affinity and efficacy for the serotonin transporter protein.
